While on a trip outside your country, one would like to self-drive and enjoy the road trip. But a country’s domestic license is valid only within the concerned country. You will need an International Driving License or permit to drive outside your country. The international driving license or permit is a document that authorises motorists as legally licensed drivers in the country they have travelled to. The International Driving license or permit is a document that gives motorists a legal right to drive in a country other than theirs. The International Driving Permit is also a document containing the translation of common driving conditions in multiple languages that assists the driver in communicating with authorities. It is also identity-proof since it has a driver’s photograph. An International Driving License is certified by the United Nations, giving tourists the freedom to drive in a foreign land.
Eligibility to apply
Any country motorists holding concerned countries driving license intending to drive in a foreign country can apply for this. The validity of an international driving license is one year from the date it was issued.
Who are not eligible to apply?
If the applicant does not have a passport or driver’s license, he cannot apply for an international driving license.
Process of application
The following bodies can issue international driving:
- Regional transport office or RTO
- International Traffic Control Association (ITCA)
Applying at RTO is to fill the form 4A and Form 1A and submit all the required documents. For online application, the applicant must go to the concerned transport website, download both forms, take printouts and submit them at RTO. The fee for the license is a fixed price of Rs. 1000, and Rs. 200 is to be paid for the processing fee.
Another way of getting an international driving permit is by visiting the International Control Traffic Association website. The following documents are necessary for applying for an international driving permit through ITCA
- Scanned copy of the national driving license and Passport of the applicant
- Passport-sized photograph of the applicant
- Payment of processing fee of 34 USD
Documents necessary for application for an international driving licence
The following documents will be submitted to RTO to acquire an International Driving Licence.
- Valid driving Licence & copies of it
- 3 recent passport-size photographs of the applicant
- Valid proof like a Passport & copies of it
- Proof of Visa and copies of it
- Copy of flight ticket for verification purposes
- Receipt for payment of charges
- An application for an international driving license in Form – 4A
- Medical certificate of the applicant in Form 1A
With those documents submitted, you can get your international driving license from the RTO, which will be provided within a week.
